Allergic Eye Disease

Allergic eye disease, also known as allergic conjunctivitis is an eye inflammation which is caused by an allergic reaction to substances such as pollen or mould spores.

Inside the eyelids and the clear covering of the eyeball, exists a membrane called the conjunctiva.

This membrane is susceptible to irritation caused by allergens, especially during the hay fever season.

How are allergic eye diseases diagnosed?

The symptoms are:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Painful eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Vision problems
  • Red eyes
  • Clear, watery discharge

How are allergic eye diseases treated?

Treatment depends on severity of the condition; the following may be prescribed:

  • Artificial tears: These are eye drops which dilute the allergen and help remove it.
  • Mast cell stabilisers: These are eye drops which may be used with antihistamines. Antihistamines help relieve symptoms before the mast cell stabilisers start working; they take time to work but provide long-lasting relief.
  • Antihistamines: These help bring fast relief from symptoms and may come in the form of a pill or eye drops.
  • Corticosteroids: These are only prescribed when you are experiencing severe symptoms. Corticosteroids help reduce swelling and decrease the body's immune response.
